Is Urinary Tract Infection An Early Symptom Of Kidney Stones?

The human body's urinary tract is divided into 2 parts:
1. the upper tract (including the kidneys and the ureter) and
2. the lower tract (including the bladder and urethra).

A. THE LOWER TRACT

According to most doctors and physicians it is relatively easier to treat lower tract infections.

Urinary tract infections (UTI) involving the lower tract are actually bacterial infections. Although your urine is technically bacteria free, bacteria may still be introduced to this in other ways.

Ways you can get infected the lower tract includes:

1. Catheterizations and sexual intercourse are some of the source of the bacteria that gets introduced in the urine and further results to urinary tract infections.

2. Compromised functions of the body. Such is the case for diabetics, for instance. For those with diabetes, the nerve damage to the bladder prevents it from contracting properly and emptying the bladder completely.

3. HIV or other diseases patients, which result to suppressed immunity may also lead to urinary tract infections. Due to the difference in anatomy of men and women, the latter is more prone to this disease.

4. The urethra of the female is shorter than in males. As such, bacteria may travel faster to the bladder and result to the unwanted infection. Studies also show that urinary tract infection may be derived from using diaphragm in women as contraception.

5. Post menopausal women were also seen to have a higher risk for this because of the lack of the hormone estrogen which prevents the growth of bacteria in the bladder.

B. THE UPPER TRACT

Upper tract disease is actually the kidney stones. These stones are actually mineral deposits that are formed in the renal system. Kidney stones are usually asymptomatic if they are localized in the kidneys. This means that if they stay in your kidneys, you would hardly notice any pain or discomfort.

If you are contracted with upper tract infections, you should take such illnesses seriously. You could be suggested to be hospitalized. UTI and kidney stone are some of the more popular and more common diseases involving these organs of the body.

The problem actually comes when it breaks off and travels down your urethra. It can cause blockage and a painful sensation in the back once it hits your groins. Your UTI and kidney stone may be related. If one suspects that a uti is accompanied by kidney stones, medical help should be sought right away. There is no need to panic, however.

Treatment is available. Kidney stones may be removed depending on its size. For kidneys less than 5mm, drinking plenty of water of fluids may help rid you of the stones. For those bigger than this, medical intervention may be required. There is lithotripsy or manual removal via a scope.

These procedures are accompanied by anesthesia so it is really painless. UTI and kidney stone are illnesses that have to be taken seriously.

Conclusion

The lower tract infection may be treated at home with antibiotics and proper hygiene. If you've upper tract infection, i.e. kidney stones, you should seek a doctor for better consult and a treatment plan.
